“Bye Mr. Narwhal” From The Movie “Elf”

Watercolor & Crayon Resist

IMG_1768.JPG

What You’ll Need:

  • Watercolor paints in “cool” colors (like purples, blues and greens). We used watercolor made from recycled dried up markers. Find out how here.

  • Crayola Construction Paper Crayons. You can also use oil pastels, but we find these crayons don’t flake when using with watercolor paints.

  • Paintbrushes

  • Permanent Markers

  • Pencils/Erasers

Instructions:

  1. Using a pencil, sketch Mr. Narwhal. Sketch his environment (such as the candy cane forest, swirly twirly gum drops, water and snow).

  2. Outline your pencil lines in permanent marker. Add color in using crayons. Draw snowflakes using a white crayon (you’ll be able to see the white after adding watercolors).

  3. Cover the drawing in watercolor paints. The marker/crayon marks will resist the paint. Use “cool” colors like purples, blues and greens to make it feel icy and cold in your picture.
